Cedar Peak – Adding to the vibrancy of downtown Squamish

About this project

The concept for this site aims to contribute to the vibrant fabric of downtown Squamish through form, materiality and function. This design’s intent is to maximize residential and commercial uses, while keeping below the floor area ratio in the latest OCP. The massing is broken up into smaller volumes and a stepping facade, providing views towards the surrounding mountains and a low street wall height along Cleveland Ave. The Squamish Employment Lands Strategy references the insufficient amount of employment spaces shown in future projections. To address this shortfall, the project proposes a 5 storey office block with 11’ commercial ceilings at the northeast portion. This office block has prime frontage along Cleveland Ave with views of the surrounding neighbourhood and mountain ranges, which are unique and highly desirable for the local market. The residential portion of the project wraps the corner of Cleveland Ave and Winnipeg St with staggered levels that break down the typical rectangular massing and provide clear views towards the surrounding mountains at a grade. This gentle stepping softens the corner and opens the plaza to more sun, sky and helps preserve views while providing space and air for the public realm.

Natural materials are used throughout the interior and exterior facade to connect to the surrounding context, and warm and vibrant colours are used to invite and welcome the community by creating a lively and active presence at the main intersection. The project will meet the Low Carbon Incentive Program, with the residential portion meeting Step Code 4 and the office and retail meeting Step Code 2 using low carbon energy sources.

The proposed design on this corner site in downtown Squamish is a prominent location where the neighbourhood is engaged, and where the community can live, work and share experiences. The design is committed to providing 6 affordable rental units, better employment spaces and increasing the public realm at the heart of Squamish.
